Nordic Event at the Leaders Summit

Renewable energy solutions

Date: Friday 25 June 2010 at 7:30-8:45
Venue: the Imperial and Julliard rooms of the New York Marriott Marquis (same hotel as the Summit itself)
Dear Global Compact Nordic Network and other stakeholders,
This invitation is for those of you participating in the Global Compact Leaders Summit in New York later this month as well as those who are still considering. Please read to the end to see how you register - and how your company can contribute!
On the Friday the 25th of June from 7.30 - 8.45AM, the Global Compact Nordic Network, the Confederation of Danish Industries and the Danish Ministry for Economy and Business Affairs are hosting a side event to the Global Compact Leaders' Summit. The meeting will take place in the Imperial and Julliard rooms of the New York Marriott Marquis (same hotel as the Summit itself) and breakfast will be served. The meeting will feed into the third session of the Summit - called "Achieving Development" and moderated by Jeffrey Sachs - which takes place right after this breakfast side event.
The topic for discussion is the potential for companies to build on their innovative capabilities to develop products and services that provide solutions to the world’s most urgent social and environmental challenges. There will be a special emphasis on the needs of the poor (the base of the pyramid) and what is required to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
The meeting will be opened by the Danish Minister for Economy and Business Affairs, Brian Mikkelsen, and moderated by the CEO and General Director of the Confederation of Danish Industry, Hans Skov Christensen. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Colombia University and Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General, has been invited but is still to confirm his attendance.
All Summit participants from the Nordic region and Japan are invited in addition to a few other companies and organizations from other countries. Nordic and Japanese businesses share some interesting similarities related to the topic at hand; they have high levels of innovative capacity and traditionally develop high-end products, but in both places a number of companies have recently caught an interest in developing sustainable products for the populations at the base of the economic pyramid.
The side event will feature a few short introductory interventions on the potential for the private sector to develop market-based solutions to meeting global social and environmental challenges as well as on the needs at the base of the pyramid. Following this, the floor will be open for all participating companies with an opportunity for you to share your views and perspectives as well as, most importantly, present whatever new initiatives or commitments you would like to make public.
As you may know, the Global Compact has been calling for all companies registered for the Leaders Summit to use the opportunity of the Summit – which will attract significant media attention - to launch any significant new initiatives and commitments related to their participation in the UN Global Compact. These new commitments will be announced in various ways during and after the Summit - more information on this will follow later this week in a communication from the Global Compact Office.
The breakfast meeting will provide companies with an additional platform for getting recognition for their initiatives and commitments. In addition to the interest that will be generated during the side meeting itself, the idea is to release a press statement from the side event that will feature any new commitments or initiatives that will be announced at the meeting.
To register, please email Ole Lund Hansen at Maximum capacity is approx. 60 persons so register early to secure your participation. If you already now know that you or another representative of your company would like to make a short intervention related to the topic for discussion, please indicate this in the email when you register. If you have any questions related to the event, please use the same email address or call Ole at +1 917 536 0355.
All companies from the Global Compact Nordic Network can obviously register for the breakfast meeting, whether you have anything related to the agenda that you want to share or not. The meeting will in any event provide an opportunity for you to meet and interact with your Nordic peers and hence further strengthen the cooperative spirit and sense of community that exists within the Nordic Network.
